Our History

First Baptist Bonham was organized in November 1852.  The first log church on this site also doubled as the school.  Cost of this lot - then outside city limits - was $50.   In 1855 a new frame church was built.  In this building other denominations held joint Sunday School services.  Due to the constant growth of the church, it became evident that another building would be necessary which was constructed in 1882.  By the year 1915, the church building was no longer adequate for further growth and development.  A building crusade was initiated and a new building was completed and dedicated in 1921 free of debt, despite unusual difficulties encountered including the scarcity of supplies and inflation at the close of World War I, and the Spanish Flu global pandemic.  Despite challenging circumstances, the church saw the need for future expansion and through their steadfast faith the building was completed and the church was debt free.  The present church was dedicated 1959. As church membership grew space was outgrown requiring some small groups to meet off campus. A building campaign was started for the existing Activity building which would provide adequate space for everyone to meet on campus and provide a larger facility for churchwide events.  Construction was completed in 2008. In November of 2021, the church undertook a campus refresh. Phase 1: the sanctuary and lobby were completed in 2023.
